SAF Lecture: Design vs Style and other Eames Philosophies

  • 08 Oct 2013
  • 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
  • Ringling College of Art + Design, Academic Center Auditorium

Charles and Ray Eames are among the most influential American designers of the 20th Century, best known for their groundbreaking contributions to furniture design, architecture, industrial design and manufacturing, textiles, and the photographic arts. In this course their grandson Eames Demetrios will present a personal, behind-the-scenes look at the remarkable careers of Mid-Century designers Charles and Ray Eames. Mr. Demetrios will share insights into the processes and philosophies of Charles and Ray, including the same creative struggles that challenge today’s designers. To honor the centennial of Ray's birth, Eames will highlight her formidable design roleundefinedan aspect of the partnership that has often been downplayed. Charles Eames had an expression he learned in the movie industry, "The blood will never show", referring to the hard work required to make things look easy and natural to the viewer. Eames Demetrios will shed light on this bit of wisdom and tie it back to one of the most important design collaborations of the past century.
