Selecting the Ideal Pre-Glazed Fenestration System

for Your Project

Wednesday, October 4

12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Presented by:

This course is a broad overview that covers the essential basics of extruded aluminum and glass fenestration systems, emphasizing the differences of pre-glazed unitized fabrication, assembly and installation processes versus on-site glazing and " stick" assembly. The benefits and disadvantages of these methods will be compared and examined. The course focuses on exploring the similarities and differences between these building system types: Curtain Wall, Window Wall, and Storefront Framing, with discussion including both captured systems and SSG (Structural Silicone Glazing). Glass types and glazing materials will be reviewed in terms of their effect on thermal performance, sustainable design, and the well-being, comfort, and safety of occupants. Glazing materials and types will include monolithic glass; insulating glass; high-performance coatings; tempered architectural safety glass; laminated glass; electrochromic (dynamic) glass; curved glass; bird strike deterrent glass, and how to select the ideal materials for a specific project. Discussion includes the many potential design options available for facade fenestration systems that enhance both form and function. Included are types of finishes available; metal and wood panels; brick, tile and stone; integrated operable windows; sunshades; handrails/glass-rails/windscreens; and vertical and horizontal fins. Relevant building codes, standards, and testing protocols in terms of thermal transmittance, air infiltration, structural, wind, hurricane impact, acoustic, seismic, and blast and ballistic mitigation will be reviewed. Discussion also covers which certifications to look for when selecting a fenestration provider and installation contractors, and the significance of safety and continuous staff and contractor training.
