Keynote Speaker: Allan Shulman, FAIA

Allan Shulman, FAIA
Founding Principal, Shulman + Associates

Allan Shulman FAIA founded Miami-based Shulman + Associates in 1996. His firm is committed to the creation of site-specific designs based on multidisciplinary research, the exploration of ideas and the fostering of strong relationships. Its work is widely published and has been honored with over 70 design awards. Allan is also an author, editor, lecturer, curator and associate professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture.

Allan will discuss the challenges -- and the joys -- of designing under strict codes and approval processes. As a framework for the discussion, Allan will present several of his firm’s award-winning projects as case studies.  Comparisons will be drawn among parameters imposed by different codes and approvals processes in Florida, from historic preservation guidelines to Miami 21 to hurricane restrictions. Do these parameters hinder a design process or enrich it? Is it possible to maintain integrity of the design intent with so many constraints?
